Today, the Supreme Court harshly criticized the Central Government for doing little to address a case involving “misleading and false” marketing by Patanjali Ayurved, a company that yoga guru Ramdev co-owns.
The Supreme Court said, “The government is sitting with its eyes closed.”
According to the Supreme Court, this kind of marketing is misleading the whole nation. “This is very unfortunate. The government will have to take some immediate action,” the bench said.
The court ordered the company to stop right away all print and electronic ads for its medicines that provided false information.
In November of last year, Patanjali Ayurved received a warning from the Supreme Court for making “false” and “misleading” statements in their marketing on its medicines.
“What happened to this Guru Swami Ramdev Baba?… Ultimately we respect him as he popularised yoga. We all go for this. But, he should not criticise the other system. You see the type of advertisements accusing all the doctors as if they are killers or something. Huge advertisements (have been given),” the bench led by the now-retired CJI NV Ramana at the time had said.
The Center’s attorney had been urged by the Supreme Court to come up with a solution to the problem of deceptive medical advertising.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) mentioned a number of commercials that purportedly painted allopathy and its practitioners in a negative light. The IMA also claimed that companies that provide ayurvedic drugs have also made “disparaging” claims in an effort to deceive the public.
The IMA’s legal representative said that these advertisements claim that doctors are dying even if they use contemporary medications.
