A petition about the Building Collapse of an illegally built five-story structure in Kolkata’s Garden Reach area, which resulted in the deaths of over five persons and injuries to many more living in neighboring shanties, was mentioned before the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, 19th march of 2024.
A division bench consisting of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya heard the case.
The petitioner claimed that the engineer who had ‘turned a blind eye’ to these works while they were underway would lead an investigation into the building collapse, which would be stage-managed.
According to the argument, the investigation was intended to conceal similar unauthorized projects that were located nearby.
Behind closed doors, the corporation’s engineer who has closed his eyes and allowed this to happen will handle the investigation. This will not result in anything. Regarding the further fifty comparable structures that are planned for the region, it was said that I have filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).
In light of this, the Court accepted the petitioner’s plea and scheduled a hearing for this Thursday, 21th march of 2024.
