Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance in RG Kar Hospital Rape and Murder Case

A doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, triggering the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance of the case.

A panel consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra is scheduled to address the issue on Tuesday(August 20). The case is titled “In Re: Alleged Rape and Murder of Trainee Doctor in RG Kar Medical College Hospital, Kolkata and related issues.”

The case was registered on Sunday 18th of August 19, 2024 at 01:03 PM.

A tragic incident occurred on August 9 when the lifeless body of a post-graduate trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar room of R.G. Kar Hospital. A civic volunteer was arrested by the Kolkata Police the following day in relation to this matter.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court instructed the Central Bureau of probe (CBI) to assume control of the probe due to its dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police. The High Court issued the order in response to applications made by one of the victim’s parents and other persons.

The High Court bench, consisting of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya, presided over the case, “The parents of the victim have an apprehension that if the investigation is allowed to continue in this manner, it will derail. Therefore they pray for extraordinary relief. One more disturbing aspect is that a case of unnatural death was registered. It is submitted that such cases are registered when there is no complaint. When the deceased was a doctor in the same hospital, it is surprising why the principal did not lodge a complaint. There has been no significant progress in the investigation. The administration was not with the victim or her family. The principal has not even given a statement. Without significant progress in the investigation, we would be well justified in accepting the prayers by the victim’s parents that evidence would be destroyed. Therefore we transfer the investigation to the CBI to do justice between parties and to inspire public confidence,” .

The High Court has reprimanded the West Bengal administration for the incidents of deliberate destruction at the RG Kar hospital during the demonstrations on August 14.
